What a great group. Been following posts and been a lot of help. My question is, I am rebuilding my carb on a 25hp '72 evinrude. The manual says to back out the low speed needle valve 1 1/4 turns after lightly seated. I took exactly 30 turns to screw it in. Is this a valid spec? I doesn't seem like thats right.
Thanks for all the help.

It is.
I don't know why they have so much thread on them. I never counted though. ;)

If your idle circuit was clogged, they may have backed out the needle really far trying to get it to run right.

Re: IV carb

Thanks Paul, One other question on the same topic. When I spray carb cleaner through the valve opening I notice that the 3 tiny hole in the bore of the carb, 1 has a steady stream, the other 2 have only a strong spray(mist). I this indicative a clog?

Re: IV carb

Perhaps. The carb kit should have come with a convex silver disc (core plug) to replace the one just over those tiny holes. That gives you the chance visually inspect behind there. If you have that plug but need instructions on how to remove and replace it, just ask.

Re: IV carb

Paul, I do not have a new carb kit. Just a small bag of carb parts that were given to me with the boat. I see the disk that you are talking about, but dont have a replacement and my guess is it can't be reused. Also, my 6 yr old daughter is helping. If it wasn't for her help, I would be frustrated, but she has practically put the carb back together herself. What an experience.

Re: IV carb

Well then just poke those holes out with a bit of wire and hope for the best. Just try not to mar those holes with it. Those plugs are one-use-onlies, so if you don't have a fresh one don't pull the old one.

The little-uns are great help rebuilding carbs. They seem to have more patience than most us older folks. Bet she's the only one in her class who's rebuilt a boat motor carb this weekend. :)
