J late 60's 33 Electric lower unit

I've tried a search on this, and read lots of posts, but still have some questions...

My circa 69 Johnson Seahorse 33 Electric had water in the lower unit when I bought it. I changed/filled the unit twice over the summer due to what appears to be a bad seal behind the prop. (Engine is mounted on my pathetic pontoon. Rotton deck, no furnature, no top, small toons.)

Since it is now the off-season, I'd like to repair it. (I have some VW air-cooled engine experience, but do not consider myself an expert mechanic by any means.) My additional complication is that it keeps coming out of gear. 5 seconds in gear, 5 seconds out.

One post indicated this was a worn gear you could just 'flip over' and put the worn teeth in the reverse position. (Although I think I would rather replace it.)

Another post cautioned to get any materials/parts for motors of this era before tearing down since they may be hard to find?

I have Clymer manuals on order from library.

My questions are these:

1) Paid $600 for toon and motor. Is it worth fixing, or selling for $500? (Given the toons are small, the deck is rotten, and the motor needs work. The ice will go out in March. :)

2) What parts/tools/resources do I need to order to 'do it right' - can a 'moderate' shadetree mechanic rebuild a lower unit (and generally do anything else the motor should need) - and how much should I expect to spend? (PS: a website that shows how to do this to a similar John/Rude with pictures would be great.)

3) Short of going to the local marina where prices are higher and have to pay taxes, where do you recommend purchasing these parts?

4) Anyone in the Western Racine/Waukesha/Kenosha/Walworth area with tools and experience willing to give me in person pointers? (My launch is on Fox/Tichigan.)

That "in and out of gear" symptom sounds to me like prop ventilation, Vdub.

If the engine is truly jumping out of gear it is unlikely to jump back in. Are you getting a loud clunk when this happens, or just abrupt changes in engine rpm?

You do need to reseal the lower end, and you can inspect the gears at that time. Don't overlook the possibility that it is the drain/vent plug gaskets that are leaking, rather than the propshaft seal. Always use new ones after you service the foot.

You can get/order parts through any JohnnyRude dealer or NAPA Auto Parts store.

Study the procedures carefully after you get your manual, then bring us any more questions you have.

Good luck. :)

One post indicated this was a worn gear you could just 'flip over' and put the worn teeth in the reverse position
The post are referring to the clutch dog ,can be flipped on some engines but....

When you get the manual read it ,read some more ,then lower the lower unit ,inspect the bearings , propshaft , and gears .
If they look ok ,purchase parts.
From Sierra catalog ( 2003 ) 33hp 1962-70
Seal kit 18-2686 includes all below ,price $20 ?

Shift rod gasket oe# 304764
Oil seal...........oe# 313284
Oil seal...........oe# 302564
Washer............oe# 311598
O-ring.............oe# 301877
O-ring.............oe# 302588
O-ring.............oe# 307853,322598

Add this one to the list too ;)
New impeller 18-3006 ,$33 ?

Sierra parts can be purchased from Napa .
Do check parts # against your engine .

it keeps coming out of gear
Check gear rod adjusment ( rod between gear handle and lowerunit ) does it move the clutch dog ALL the way into gear .

Re: J late 60's 33 Electric lower unit

Thanks to you both... I am picking up the manuals at the library tonight.

The 'in and out' problem is a short surge in power, followed by an increase in RPM and loss of power, followed by lower RPMs and power surge again. Feels like a clutch slipping, grabbing, slipping, grabbing...

The LU was full of water when I got it - but it ran fine. Wondering if the damage is internal. Used all summer, but kept refilling LU oil every 6 weeks or so...

By prop ventilation, I assume you mean dings/deformation of the prop. It does have dings (I live on a river) but they're not 'terrible' like those on the 90HP ski boat. :)

I'll run a serial number tonight, and figure out exactly what year and what I have to get those parts. My NAPA (right on the river) doesn't carry any marine parts anymore. :( Found that out last summer.

But Bombadier is from Racine - and I live in Racine (county) 25 miles away or so. You would think the parts could be gotten if they exist!

I also need a new gasket for between the fiberglass lid and the motor. Mine sort of 'degraded' - looks rather generic like a weatherstrip glued/tacked around the inside...

I'll check and see what Clymer has to say!

Re: J late 60's 33 Electric lower unit

Your newer explanation sounds like a spun prop hub or broken shear pin, Vdub.

In the electric and electrohydraulic gearcases FWD is the default gear (no power to the solenoids). I wonder if you have a loose wire and intermittent short actually shifting it in and out of gear.

If there is no clunk I suspect the worn gear/dog theory. I wouldn't go buying parts until I had eliminated the prop hub, engine rigging (ventilation) and the electric harness from suspicion.

Prop ventilation is caused by the engine being mounted too high or tilted out too far letting the blades grab air and try to run in foam instead of water. It is not a prop problem, it is a rigging problem.

Good luck. :)
