I've tried a search on this, and read lots of posts, but still have some questions...

My circa 69 Johnson Seahorse 33 Electric had water in the lower unit when I bought it. I changed/filled the unit twice over the summer due to what appears to be a bad seal behind the prop. (Engine is mounted on my pathetic pontoon. Rotton deck, no furnature, no top, small toons.)

Since it is now the off-season, I'd like to repair it. (I have some VW air-cooled engine experience, but do not consider myself an expert mechanic by any means.) My additional complication is that it keeps coming out of gear. 5 seconds in gear, 5 seconds out.

One post indicated this was a worn gear you could just 'flip over' and put the worn teeth in the reverse position. (Although I think I would rather replace it.)

Another post cautioned to get any materials/parts for motors of this era before tearing down since they may be hard to find?

I have Clymer manuals on order from library.

My questions are these:

1) Paid $600 for toon and motor. Is it worth fixing, or selling for $500? (Given the toons are small, the deck is rotten, and the motor needs work. The ice will go out in March.

2) What parts/tools/resources do I need to order to 'do it right' - can a 'moderate' shadetree mechanic rebuild a lower unit (and generally do anything else the motor should need) - and how much should I expect to spend? (PS: a website that shows how to do this to a similar John/Rude with pictures would be great.)

3) Short of going to the local marina where prices are higher and have to pay taxes, where do you recommend purchasing these parts?

4) Anyone in the Western Racine/Waukesha/Kenosha/Walworth area with tools and experience willing to give me in person pointers? (My launch is on Fox/Tichigan.)
