Folks,

Still getting motor ready (j140 82'), I had a heating problem and thought I would inspect water jacket, thermostats, etc. The person I bought the boat from said they had replaced the head gaskets.

When I pulled the cyl head covers there was a lot of salt build up and some sand (not good), I was dilligent about flushing after running in the gulf.

On the port side I could see the port that goes into the head and it looked fine (a little salty and rusty but not clogged). On the starboard side when I looked down the port I could see (VERY CLEARLY!) nice bright letters and the port was completely blocked by the gasket.

My question is, is this normal?

In my oppinion when they installed the head gasket on the starboard side they did it incorrectly and blocked the port. It was obvious (by the effort I had to go through to free up the head cover bolts) that they had never pulled the head covers, just the entire head covers still attached.

The picture below is the starboard side, where I think the port is blocked.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Safe boating to all.

cheers.

emp.

Ed, what you thought was sand was most likely salt which had crystallized. I've taken LU's off saltwater motors and found what looked like sand packed around the water pump housing. It's always been salt. Good reason for very thorough flushing after EVERY sw use.

Are the port and stbd head gaskets the same? Can they be installed flipped, but on the correct bank?

WildeOne,

Clymer doesn't say anything about them being different, I haven't pulled the head, still trying to determine if I have to.

I have been again looking at the clymer, the port and starboard side cirulation, water restricters and ports are not in the same location. They do, however, appear to be mirrors, so it looks like the same gasket would be flipped in one side.

What I don't understand is I can see the gasket down the port on the starboard side, but I cannot see the gasket on the port side, although each port seems to bottom out at the same distance. I measured each with a screw driver to see what the depth on each port was.

Any futher assistance is greatly appreciated.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Ed, next motor you get, buy an OEM shop manual. A few more bucks, but way ahead in detail. I've used them for over 20 years and seldom have any questions. The OMC books typically has cutaway exploded pictures showing a load of detail for water circulation (including gasket orientation). I don't have the shop book for your model year, but maybe you could cajole your local OMC dealer to let you look at their book.

The illustrations are VERY complete and include all cooling system devices, including water deflectors and their locations.

I saw your picture you posted earlier, but it's gone now ...

Wildeone,

Still looking for OEM manual, haven't found one yet. Still need to know about this gasket thing.

Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated.

Windeone, thanks for taking the time. The picture is back now, not sure what happened, didn't change anything on my WEB site, must be the carrier.

I can post more detailed pictures if that would help. Still don't want to pull the head without a reason.

http://www.alltel.net/~th2576 has more pics.

Thanks in advance.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Ed, all of the OMC OEM manuals I've bought have everything they made in a specific model year, from the small 1 cyl to big V6 OB'sb and it's always a BIG book (i.e. 6" or more thick). Stern drives and racing motors were separate books.

WildeOne,

Thanks the whole "shabang" is fine, not overly concerned about the price (fair deal), just want the manual, have been searching WEB and checking e-bay regularly.

If anyone want's to part with Johnson 1982 model year OEM manuals, negotiation will be simple, fair price, sold!

Thanks.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.
