J25 lower unit removal

I'm trying to change the water pump on '94 j25. The lower unit bolts came out great and the case separated nicely, but i can't get it to drop more than about 1/2". I know theres a shift rod that needs to release, but cant see inside very well. Anyone know how to separate to get the unit to drop?

Remove the water intake screens -------Then you see the shift rod connecter.-----Scrape the paint off the upper rod if need be.---Undo the nuts.----Slide the UPPER nut up the rod and remove that plastic tapered keeper.---That keeper is split and has to be removed.
