Had a couple questions about this motor.

First off, the starter isn't working properly. The armature isn't popping up to engage the flywheel but is spinning. Is this a problem with the bendix drive? Is there a way to repair just the drive or should I just get a full starter assembly to fix it? And it's looking like 3-4 bolts to remove the starter and put a new one in, is it really this simple or is there way more to this than I'm anticipating?

Second question is about a little plastic piece that got sheared off...I believe it's the pivot pin that attaches to the throttle control rod, but i'm not sure because I can't see a real picture of it. It has a square head and a cylindrical base with a cotter pin on the bottom. Just want to make sure I'm ordering the right piece here (#83 on the diagram below).

Thanks in advance for your input

Try spraying a little WD40 on the starter shaft. If that frees it up to spin then take a light oil and put a few drops on the shaft. I use my wife's sewing machine oil when she is not looking. As for the second question I can't answer that.

I'll give that a shot and see what it does, if it still doesn't pop up I guess I'll be buying a new starter assembly. Is replacing it relatively simple? And better watch out, she might start stealing your tools to start working on her sewing machine when it breaks:eek:

Don't buy a new one. Take it to a shop locally and have it rebuilt. Half the price of a new one. I assume that your battery was fully charged and all your connections were clean when you did this. She won't touch my tools because she knows she won't get anything fixed! they are easy to take off just remember to disconnect your battery. You may have to take carb off to get to one bolt easier.

Yeah the only problem is that all the local shops around me charge ~$120/hr, and you know how that first hour is charged after they look at it. So if I can buy it for $170 and put it in myself I think it'd almost be cheaper. That's unless you know of a spot in the washington dc/baltimore md area that wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg:confused:. Any ideas?

And does anybody know if I'm right about that pivot pin? I'm like 99% sure but don't feel like ordering the wrong part...

Check with a local dealer on your part, then get it from him. you will need him one of these days. Call the shops and see what they charge for a rebuild.

Have you twisted the bendix by hand? to confirm its stuck in the down position? can you twist it by hand and have it rise?
A starter can be found on ebay for less than 70 bucks.but first get that bendix free,so you dont waste your money

Re: J25elcoc starter issue

thats a good question - one day i was out on the water and had to pull start it to get back because the bendix wasn't popping up - when i got home i spun it by hand and tried the key start again - sure enough it popped up and engaged properly. next trip out on the water it started up fine a few times, but then had to manually start it, couldn't get it to come up.

i tried pulling it up by hand but wasn't sure if it should move up and down freely unless the key was turned? I couldn't seem to find the right tool to get a good hold of it and pull it up, but it definitely seems like it's locked in the down position...

you have to twist it dont just try to pull it up TWIST it,it will come up then.If not its rusted or gunked up on the drive shaft. You'll have to use some WD and keep trying it till its free.Once its free clean it with spray carb cleaner, oil it with light oil,and then try it with the elec.start.If then it doesnt work the starter hasnt the umph to work it.Counterclock wise the starter turns, you have to turn the gear clockwise to make it rise. You can use a wooden dowel on the gear and tap it clockwise to free it.
