Hi I just bought a nice 35hp Johnson and I'm in the process of going through it as it has set for many years. My choke solenoid is not functioning I checked the circuit with a volt meter and found that the choke circuit has 2.5 volts voltage in the off position and 12.6 volt in the on (key In) position. I'm not sure where this voltage bleed through is coming from. I don't know is this is normal or i have a problem brewing. The engine runs fine. Has anyone ever noticed anything like This? Thanks.......Robert

Thanks for the response. I just installed a brand new ignition switch with a push to choke function. The voltage is still present. I've ordered a new choke solenoid and will re-check the circuit after that's installed. The only reason, I guess, I found this stray voltage was I the battery hooked up trying out the new switch.

If it is wired correctly there should be no voltage at the choke unless the (push) switch is activated. Stray voltage can come from dirt/water/corrosion in the cable connector plug. Or corroded wires within the cable. Or ???!!!!!

You dont need to wait for the solenoid to arrive, check the wires now, there shouldnt be any voltage on the line til the key is depressed

When you're measuring the voltage where are you putting the black meter lead?

The black meter lead was grounded to the block.. After a few test I narrowed the problem down to the engine wire harness. The choke wire was corroded. I ran a parallel wire in the harness and it has corrected the problem. 0 volts in the off position and 12.57 in the on. My new solenoid work like a champ. Thanks for all the help......Robert
