I have a J70ELCNB 70HP johnson and i cant get it to start. Have had the boat for years and usually even when its freezing cold out will start right up. Got down to the ramp last night put the boat in the water and i could not get it to start to save my life. The battery was newly charged and when i pushed the key in i could hear the choke engage, when i turned the key i could hear a click but the starter wouldnt turn. What would be the most likely culpirt? Is it the solenoid (god i hope its the solenoid) or somthing more serious? How do i test to see if the starter solenoid is shot? Is it just a simple continuity test or somthing more involved. We are in peak striper season down here and i really wana get this thing back ini the water ASAP, any help would be apreciated.

Make sure all battery connections are clean and tight; all connrctions on solenoid are clean and tight and any fuses in the lines are good. Make sure you are in neutral on you shift lever. Check battery for 12.5 volts. Good luck!:)

battery was at 12.5 volts, the neutral shift switch was engaged because the choke solenoid wouldnt work if it was not. The battery has two posts that are threaded and the leads from the motor were bolted onto these posts and nothing else was conected to the battery. When i turn the key without engaging the choke i hear a click but the shaft on the starter does not move at all. ususally if the battery's low it will at least turn shaft on the starter

Try tapping the starter with a wrench as you turn the key.
That shaft [ in the starter ] needs to be lubed or it will stick & only give you a click if it's not.

Check the battery voltage with the key in the START position. Bet you see it drop to nearly zero. Even a nearly dead battery can show 12 volts with no load. And by the way, 12.6 volts is a fully charged battery. 12 volts is pretty well toast.

the battery was pulled fresh off the charger after it charged for a complete day, the battery before i charged it was used to jump a car a day or two fbefore it was charged. I will have the battery load tested. I will check to see if the starter is frozen. I used the boat 1 week ago and had no problems what so ever, first turn of the key and she started right up. used it last night and got nowhere

Have you tried going directly to starter bypassing the soleniod?

I agree with Will, get some battery jumper cables and go directly to the starter mtr. Is your battery ground connection on the mtr good and tight ?

have you possibly undone the wiring on the solenoid and put it back the wrong way?
l have the same motor which wasn't running when l bought it, turned out that the previous owner had put the earth wire on the wrong solenoid post, changed the wires around and away it went..after buying a new solenoid, of course LOL
just a thought

hooked up a fresh battery, solenoid clicked but nothing happened, bypassed the solenoid and the starter fired right up and turned over the engine no problem. Gonna replace the solenoid and hopefully that will fix the problem. One question, does anybody know what the rectifier does?

Changes the AC output of your charging system to DC.
