85 sea horse, was used once on grandfather's boat, then sat in a barn, covered and dry since then. seems to have been run out of fuel when shut down, but still some varnish like material in the fuel system. going to need new fuel line from pump to fitting on outside of engine, and figured on replacing fuel pump. anything else i should do right off the bat besides spark plugs. engine not locked up. going to put on a 14' meyers semi-v for freshwater travel. engine looks brand new

the old wooden boat isn't worth the time. if you want pictures, look up a new J8RCOB. that's what it looks like with a coat of wax. the residual fuel is not hardened, still a wet state of fluid. the fuel line was dry rot, but looked good on the outside.

looking for threads that cover accessing the impeller. what's nice is, there is a good amount of information about servicing this engine

having trouble uploading pictures of motor. took like it was never used. pulled the other fuel line from pump to carb due to being dry, found some more of the old fuel in various consistencies. should gaskets all be replaced, or try to run before tearing it down past the fuel lines?

An '80s motor stored inside is likely good to go with some tweaking -- hoses and impeller, change out gear oil, a little lube in the cylinders and turn by hand (clockwise). I wouldn't run it before changing out the impeller, on the chance that pieces of an old impeller can break off and lodge in water passages. Get at least a parts manual for it, preferably a service manual.

The boat obviously predates the motor, and may generate some interest by itself.

ordering shop manual. barn dust gone and gave it a good coat of wax. adding water pump, carb, and fuel pump kits to list. none of these components seem to need replaced, but i have no faith in the gaskets. only work i've ever done on a boat is paddle, but the motor seems fairly simple once acquainted

gear oil had some dark material, no more than a teaspoon worth out of the total amount that was drained. the oil still smelled like new gear oil. wife's dad used to rebuild small outboards, so we are going to tear it down

float mechanism is preventing carb from sucking fuel. coils and power pack replaced to get spark. 115lbs compression. new fuel pump. runs when i put gas in cylinders, pumps water nicely. when that runs out, so does it.
