I posted this question under jack plates and did not get any responses so I will post it here. I have a 2005 sundeck 237 and I am interested in installing a jack plate for my yamaha 250. I called hurricane to ask what size jack plate I could install and did not get any help. Does anybody have any ideas? I do not want to damage my transom but would like the ability to raise and lower my motor. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to iboats. The question you're asking is fairly specific. Ive seen many Hurricanes but never one running with a jack plate installed.

Hurricane is the best to answer that question but most likely through a dealer.

From what I've read in the past, a 6 inch plate is fairly safe to install on most 'glass boats but beyond that the stress you can introduce to the transom may find your transom and motor sitting at the bottom.

If you can't find out what the transom will support from Hurricane, I suspect the next best thing would be to find someone who does this frequently on something like a bass boat who'd be more familiar with adding this.

Again, I think it's doable, but might be limited to the size you can use as you transfer that weight onto the jack plate.

Re: jack plate on hurricane deck boat

My 2006 SD217 had a Jack Plate on it originally. When the previous owner sold it and kept the motor, he took the plate and all.

I do not have on there now with the 225 Merc. However, I inspected the transom pretty close when I bought it over concerns about the jack plate and all appears to be fine.

So....Yes, it had one. No, it didn't hurt it.

Hey Bear,

The jack plate on a Hurricane sounds like it may have potential. Keep us up to date if you decide to install one on your boat. I'm following your lead............you are the Hurricane guinea pig. :D

I was wondering about the transom. On my boat I was a little surprised that when I drilled holes for my trim tabs, that I popped through a fiberglass shell into an empty space. I was expecting a solid wood backing (actually, on a couple of the holes I did hit wood). Do you know how the transom is constructed? Is there a wood support behind the engine mount?

I wonder how much difference a 4 versus 6 inch jack plate offset would be as to stress on the transom?

Stuff to keep our minds on boating over the winter!
