jack plate/transom question ...

Wondering if I should be using a transom saver on my 115 motor if I'm using a jack plate setup. Motor seems solidly on the transom with no large noticible movement during transit. I guess large bumps/rail road tracks/etc could put more load on the motor/transom? Is the Transom saver necessary?

if it was me i would.
the jack plate extends the motor out 5 to 8 in's depending on plate adding extra stress on transom.
-
the only problem is finding one that extends that far.
i bought one from cabelas that is adjustable for extended reach. works great for me.

Thanks 2K ... I'm glad you mentioned the extended length issue. Will probably go ahead and get one just for preventative reasons. I'll have to wait for a month in which I'm not already making a boat related purchase ... whenever that will be!

I've often wondered the same thing.. I never tilt my motor up so i don't think it bounces..
It looks like this in transit..
Side shot....
--Hop

Seems like the angle of the transom and the angle of the motor may be at odds with each other during a large bump. Still, I don't know how much it's going to buy you to put the transom saver on. I'm still deciding, my transom seems very solid and i don't know if it's getting any more stress on it than it would in 3 ft chop?

Use it, transoms get a lot of abuse during transit. If you can support the lower unit and transfer a lot of stress to the trailer, why not do it?

HK, you must have alot of faith in that transom.
i would not trailer like that.
ive got a friend who's motor twisted down and broke threw gel coat - into transom at lower bolt holes, after hitting an unavoidable pot hole.
-
if he had a transom saver it would still be in the water to this day.

I think it's just piece of mind when it comes to "saving the transom" but I have to use one to keep my motor from flopping side to side while driving.
