This might be an easy one for somebody out there. As for me I have no clue on what to do. Our front door has a 21 year old deadbolt lock that recently jammed up in the locked position. We never received the key for this door, so I won't be able to use the key entry.

So I removed the inside knob to the deadbolt and took a pair of plyers to the shaft thinking that it would turn the deadbolt to unlock but it didn't budge. I even flipped the little lever inside up which didn't do anything. Now I can't use the front door, which leads to my smoking area .

Any suggestions? I haven't had to deal with a deadbolt before so this is new to me. Getting pretty bad when I am trying to break out of a house :D. Thankfully we have 2 other doors, the front door is only used by me.

Not sure about yours, but on the Schlages I have the exterior lock mechanism will pop out once you remove the interior knob/lever plate. 2 screws and it falls apart.

Could the exterior lock part be painted to the door?

Hello, I had the same situation or at least similiar this summer when our deadbolt on the front door broke inside and turning the little knob did nothing. Even the key would just spin uselessly. I took the knob apart from the inside and was able to get ahold of the shaft with needlenose pliers and pulled the shaft out of the lock position. Turned out the shaft had actually broke in half! Unbelievable. It was a cheap walmart import. When I went to replace it, all that was available was cheap import crap. Good luck.

Depending on the quality........

Since you have it apart try tapping the bolt portion back into the door with a hammer...... it's obviously junk now anyway and some of the older cheaper ones would slip back into the door when struck.

Also.... after you have tried the above.... then take the screws out of the bolt portion and just try to slide it out.

Re: Jammed Deadbolt lock removal

Thanks for all the replies guys. I finally got it, obviously the little lever I was messing with needed to be lifted up higher, which it didn't do last night. I tapped on the unit a little bit, this along with all the other forceful use must of let that little lever free. So I lifted the little lever all the way up, took the plyers to the shaft and turned it presto the lock is open.

The unit is going to be replaced ASAP. Hopefully we'll get another 20+ years out of the next unit.

Now does anybody have a suggestion for removing a darn splinter? Managed to get one while working on the door :(. Just joking, I'll take care of the splinter.
