Tilt/trim broken while backing down ramp.

Tilt/trim broken while backing down ramp.

Okay I am new to the forum and hope I posted this in the right category.
Well, I just bought a 18' 1985 regal medallion bowrider yesterday. It has 323 hours on it and is a I/O with a 3.0 mercruiser, Alpha One drive in very good shape. It was owned by an elderly woman who only took it out 2-3 times a year. I went to back it down a steep boat ramp when I realized the trim was all the way down. The gauge on the dash said it was all the way up. After I heard the scraping I immediately stopped. I had to pull forward a little bit and tried to raise it up all the way using the switch on the throttle. All I heard was the trim motor running and no movement, I thought maybe it was jammed so I went to the back of the boat and lifted up on the unit while my girlfriend attempted to raise the trim from the switch on the throttle. Well, no luck, it was stuck in the down position, Only after unbolting the 2 hydraulic pistons was I able to lift up the unit and strap it in the up position. Did I jam the hydraulics somehow? Why is the guage saying it is up all the way? Any help would be greatly appreciated! The trim worked fine prior to the incident.

Rob H.

P.S. this is the first of many oops to come I am sure.

Hard to say. There is a pressure relief valve (or two) on most units which breaks away if an underwater obstruction is struck. It may have jammed open. But that's for forward movement strikes. Your strike is reverse.

One thing you might try is to thoroughly wash and dry your lift hoses (2 each side of outdrive connecting to pistons), then disconnect the hoses to your lift pistons and stick them in a container of fresh trim fluid.....Merc outboards uses ATF (not picky about which kind) or OEM fluid. Ends need to be submerged.

Then get on the up-down control and see if you can get fluid movement in and out of the hoses.

If so, that says your pump and safety valves are working ok. If not will need to give your pumping system some attention. If the pump works ok, you then may have jammed one or both of your lift pistons in the reverse direction.

Pull the "push hoses out of the container of fluid and connect to the forward end of the pistons which, when pressurized, cause the rod to extend....leave the aft end hose in the container of fluid.

Remove the aft end of the lift cylinders (rods) from the outdrive so that they are free to move independently under no load.

Activate the up button and see if the pump can push the piston out...extend the rod. Maybe one will and one won't, or both won't, or both will.

If both will, put it back together and you should be good to go. If one or both won't you will have to fix the cylinders.

Follow up on this and let us know what you find.

Hey Mark,
Thanks for the reply, I am storing the boat at my Dads house and will get to it on Saturday. I will try to diagnose it further with your info. It was dark outside when it happened so I didn't get to look at much.

Thanks again.

Moving to I/O questions and repair. You'll get a better response there.

OH man did you damage your SKEG fin?

I once got stuck wih my oat 10 years ago and when i pulled the boat onto the trailer via a docking rope I forgot about the drive being down + the battery was dead any way. I towed the boat up the ramp and heard the scraping sound and then heard a big snapping sound.

well the skeg busted completly off. Man I was pisse but then had it completly replaced and ever since then I have been anal about all my skegs being damaged!

I always check my props and skegs after I use my boat and check for damage now.

Hey guys, I went to take a look at the boat and they tilt is now working. I attempted to find the hydraulic fluid resevoir but only found the pump. Is it possible to run off of the motor oil? Also found a ton of wood rot. Not too happy.

Ayuh,.......

It's incorporated into the bottom of the Pump........

Chances are, the Fill is a small screw in the leading portside corner, at the lower area of the Pump.......

Dealing with your trim problem is the easy part. Fixing that wood rot is going to be much more work. Unfortunately that is a common problem with 20 year old boats. There are lots of guys who can help guide you the process in the repair and restoration forum.

Have a great day,

It looks as if most of the wood is rotten. Very disappointing. Thanks for the help. I am not sure if I have the talent or tools to replace all of the wood. Man, thought this would be a good boat for $1900.00. Atleast the vinyl is perfect and the motor has a little over 300 hours on it. Could be worth repairing.
