I know we are supposed to search and find the answer before we start a topic but, I have been searching for the year of my Mariner outboard and have yet to find it. the actual number part of the serial number dosen't seem to fit into common "lookups".
I have narrowed it down to between 1986 and 1989, based on other's questions.
The info on the tag states "40ELO 6E9 L 426164"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The model number 7040717 that comes up while searching the serial number has it to be a 1987 engine year....The chart online suggests it to be a late model 1986 year which if the engine was made anytime after "either it was June or July 1st" 'tends to put them into the next model year....So maybe just use what ever year you prefer that's easier to remember for you.;)

The stand alone L means Long Shaft.

40C EL 6E9-421568 - 1986
40C ELO 6E9-427343 - 1987

The OEM service manual is part number 90-84520--2 which covers engines 40A (676-A)/40B (676-B) 40C (6E9)/W40 (676-A) All serial numbers. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...0A+(676-A)/40B+(676-B)+40C+(6E9)/W40+(676-A)+

You can also search the model number ( 7040717 ) for a parts guide online if desired.
