Hey, JB...

I must be missin' something using your method for determining prop pitch. I just pulled down a 141/2 X 24 three blade and I can't find an eight inch measurement anywhere. Are you saying measure parallel to the C/L of the prop shaft from the leading edge to the trailing edge? That should be 8" for a 24" three blade?

c/6
Hooty

This is what I thought he meant, but it measures 4" here, and this is a 15", 3-blade

Maybe JB will clarify......

Yes, Hooty. Parallel to the propshaft, edge to edge. It is only dead-on for flat blades.

I should have qualified that as an estimating measurement. Any cup or variation in the actual angle of attack will cause error in this method.

Sorry if I confused anyone. :(

Re: JB & Prop Pitch Measuring Method

Not too many boaters have flat blades.

There are some crude methods and home remidies for approximating prop pitch. The best probably being to measure the blade angle at about 70-75% of the blade length and then use a prop pitch formula. I've also seen guys actually screw the prop carefully into a tub of cold grease and measure the distance it traveled in one revolution. None of which is very accurate.

If your prop shop has a wide selection of dies, they might be able to match a pitch close to yours. Or a couple of hours with a pitchometer will get you close. Better yet, a computerized tool will get you within a thousandth of an inch in just a minute or so.

Whew.
Ok, thanks JB, I thought I'd missed somethin'. Yeah Kenny, that's the way I measured too.
I think I'll check Harbor Freight and see if they have one of those computerized tools that Forktail is talking about. Probably don't cost more 'en $25-$30.

Thx ya'll & c/6
Hooty

Re: JB & Prop Pitch Measuring Method

Actually south of Hooty (in Texas), there is a place called Coastal Propeller which has the computerized tool I mentioned. The pitch measurement takes only a minute or two. Usually it's free. But if you guys prefer to pay for it, I'm sure Mike there will take your money.

If you're truly interested in measuring the propeller's pitch correctly yourself, here is one crude suggestion.

Place your prop face-up on a flat surface (aft faces of the blades up). Draw a reference line along the face of one of the prop blades, along its center from hub to tip. Then measure out from the center any convenient distance (preferably 70-75% blade length) and make a tick mark. This will be your radius measurement. Draw a transverse line across the blade face, at right angles to the radius line, through the radius tick mark. Take a straight-edge and lay it on this transverse line so that its bottom edge runs off the prop blade and just touches the flat surface or table top. Place a carpenter's square against the straightedge anywhere along the high side. Note the vertical height from the table top at that point. This will be your height measurement. Measure the base, the distance along the table top from the point of the straightedge, on the table, to the bottom corner of the square. This will be your base measurement. Then use the pitch formula.... Pitch = 2 pi x Radius x Height / Base.

This method is hard to measure with, and gets less accurate with more complex blade designs, but it will get you close. After doing it a while you will find ways to refine your measuring techniques.

Or, here are some other suggestions....

http://homepages.apci.net/~michalak/15mar03.htm#Propellor Pitch

http://www.soinc.org/wristuff/pgagerh.pdf

http://rcboat.com/febtech.htm

http://marlongofast.tripod.com/models/pitchGtxt.htm

Hooty......13.95-ebay.....BIN!!!!
No need for the sarcasm Hooty and Walleyehed. Obviously you both realize that tool is about $60,000 and can't be bought through a mail order sale catalog.

But I must admit I laughed too when I saw you using the measuring tape that way. ;)

No sarcasm intended....I thought this was how JB measured the prop for an estimation???????
Sorry

Goshes Mr. Forktail, I certainly didn't mean to sound sarcastic. I realize now how juvenile the remark was though. Those expensive pieces of scientific equipment deserve a lot more respect then that. I can assure I've learned my lesson and will never make that error again. If you could furnish me with the name and address of the manufacturer of that instrument, I will send them an immediate letter of apology.

Humblest yours,
Hooty

Hey yall- lighten up- yall got something against laughin?

I think L&S has a pitch meter a while back but it was just for approximatin. Best pitch meter I found it to throw it on your boat and see how it works. All props are different- one 28" choppper with some cup might run with lower rpm's that a 30" cleaver.

Hey Hooty - how'd that Raker work out for you?
BTW- I thought it was funny.

Hey ya Sorry Dog,
The Raker was just what the ole boat needed. It'll spin 6K and runs 74gps.
Yeah, I thought it was funny too but it pi*sed Ft off so we can't make funny about hi tech stuff no more.
How you be?

c/6
Hooty
