Does anyone own, or know someone who owns a 2006-ish Jeep Commander? My wife and I are going to go look at one tomorrow... it has the following stats:

4.7 L V8
3:73 Rear End
2900 Miles
Navus Navigation System
Other external goodies

I suspect it was a dealer demo; 2900 miles on a Jeep that is 2 years old is unheard of. I'm looking for something that I can use as a decent DD (replacing my Grand Cherokee) but will also be able to tow my Boat without shrugging. Properly equipped, this guy can tow 7200 - my boat weighs in at about 3000 with equipment and go-juice.

Any comments? Thanks!!

My son has a 2007, but it has the 5.7 hemi. He likes it OK but says it is a thirsty rascal. He drives his Accura mostly.

Re: Jeep Commander

New warranty, 2 years old, is it untitled? If titled, it IS a used car and you don't have the new car warranty, just what is left of it. But if it is new, the dealer will want to get rid of it REALLY badly! It might, however, be a program car. Either case, you should be able to make a great deal on an ALMOST new vehicle.

Re: Jeep Commander

Make sure it is the 4.7 H.O. or you will be sorely disappointed with it's towing ability.

Re: Jeep Commander

ee,
When towing there is almost never a thing as to much power, however not enough, that's another story. If your planning on keeping the vehicle for an extended period (more than 5 years) I'd be looking for exactly what I want, and not settle for what a specific dealer has on hand. The good feeling of a 'great deal' will fade quickly if the vehicle does not perform as needed.

I like them but wonder why they only get about 12 miles to the gallon.

Re: Jeep Commander

If you are going to tow make sure it has a towing package. The only part of it that's really important is the large tranny cooler. Don't try towing without it. If you get a real good deal and it doesn't have one you can have someone add it.

Re: Jeep Commander

UPDATE:

So, we went there last night. We took a test drive, it was a great vehicle; exceeded my expectations in many different ways. It has the IV Jeep Tow Package (which includes all the important towing goodies) plus lots of other stuff.

Their website and others like cars.com has it listed for $22,995; so I printed it out so I had the stock number, etc when I got there.

Throughout the whole shpeel, the sales guy wouldn't say the price he kept saying its a GREAT PRICE... well I knew that already as I had it printed out in a folder sitting on his desk. After going through the whole shpeel, he goes and prices out my Jeep as a trade-in, sits down at his desk and starts to go over the numbers.

The cost of the Commander: 29,000. What?! I said, your website has it listed for 22,995, whats with the 29000 number? Well, he said, the number on the website is wrong... this is the right number. Someone made a mistake on the price. Well, the interesting thing, is I found this Jeep on Jan. 4th, and the photos were taken in the summer (note the leaves on the trees in the photos). Something stinks to high heaven. They said they won't come down on the price and that "it has already been changed on their website."

At 3 PM this afternoon, I visited their website again and looked at the Jeep. Same price as from days earlier. For the "heckovit" I filled out the small online form that accompanies the online ad for the vehicle. I gave them my name, email and phone number. In the comments, I wrote:

> I am interested in purchasing this vehicle; is it
> still available for sale at the Internet Price?

30 minutes later, I get a response from a sales person at the dealer:

-------------------------

Hi Sean,

Thanks for your inquiry on the 2006 Jeep Commander - Stk. No. P28530. The
correct internet price for this vehicle is $26.998.00. It is available
for sale.

Please give me a call at (414) 258...

-------------------------

Hold on, $26,998?! You were going to sell it to me for 29,000 yesterday!! Not to mention the website still has it listed for 22,995.

So... here's a question. Technically, they are breaking Wisconsin law. From what I am reading on the Wisconsin DOT website in the first two sentences (follow the link below): "Wisconsin law requires car advertisements to be truthful. It requires dealerships to honor their ads."

http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/consumer/car/badcarad.htm

What would you do in my shoes? Pursue this, or no?

Do what you wish Sean, but if big dealership, they will find a loop hole to jump through to be "legal". IMHO.

And you are still interested?

They are playing with the price for payment shoppers. That is why they added your trade into the deal. There is no free lunch.

If you want to take the BS out of it. Show up with a cashiers check for $25.5K (all inclusive: taxes, tags, doc fees, etc.) and see if they let you walk. If they do, they were planning on making their $$$ in the F & I. I understand that, they are in business to make money.

If you have the VIN # call Chrysler Corp. or another Chrysler dealer. They can tell you if that vehicle has an "in service date". If it does, it's USED.

That vehicle is not going to get great fuel economy. Look at it. It has the aerodynamics of a brick. I like that look but it is not the most efficient at speeds over 60.

A smaller SUV will tow 3K# with ease, if set up correctly. However, you buy what you want. You have to enjoy the ownership experience.

Re: Jeep Commander **UPDATE** What would u do?

Re: Jeep Commander **UPDATE** What would u do?

EVERY web site has a disclaimer and the email stuff does not hold up..... The "base" model or base price of that jeep may be low but.... once the options ans add ons get added up the price goes up and up......... oh yeah did they mention that the "low price" did not include "destination/delivery fees"...... There is typically $3400 in profit in those vehicles NOT including add on items.....

So Sticker is $29000 - $3400 = $25600 Don't forget the money they make on Documentation fees........

You will never beat them on the law side of things.......

My advice.....

Lose the emotion.......

Walk Away.....;)

Look elsewhere......

Shop around. ;)

Re: Jeep Commander **UPDATE** What would u do?

Just looked at the web site and it is listed as pre-owned. It is priced in the 29K range...... something does not appear right.... the web site has the mileage listed at 195 and you stated 2900...... Someone might have stuck them with this and they are trying to make a new car profit on it. WIth the 3.73 and V-8 it will not be MPG friendly at all.

Keep shopping......

I don't go for broad statements like that. Dealerships are independent businesses. Lumping one brand all together is not valid.

My SIL had a horrible experience with an ML and the dealer. However, I do not hold that against M-B, in general. Unfortuneately, for M-B, she is soured on the brand.

Car buying is emotional, for many. I have been in the biz so long I can see through the fog.

Re: Jeep Commander **UPDATE** What would u do?

They MUST honor prices in an add like that by CA law too, but . . . I called on what I think was an honest mistake once. Waaaaaayy too good a deal, and you could see that they had accidentally used a lesser model's price from an adjacent add. So I asked the guy what they do in a situation like this, and suprisingly he told me. They "sell" it to one of their employees and then buy it back . . .

I do know a guy who got the VIN number off of a loss leader vehicle that was advertised. Got a check for the full amount from our Credit Union. Showed up at the dealer, and after a lot of yelling drove away with it

Re: Jeep Commander **UPDATE** What would u do?

I drove a new LIBERTY and I only got about 15mpg....Anyway once a friends dad went to the local chevy dealer and walked in with check book in hand and pointed to a new truck parked outside and said : I want it just tell me how much to make out the check for" The dealer was afraid to give him a straight answer so he didnt buy squat........true story,. I think there is an unwritten rule that tells all the salesmen to NEVER give a price untill you size the SUCKER UP and find out how stupid he may be to some fast talk and fast figures.......why let a guy buy the car before you figure out if there might be some way to get him for more.

Well, I decided to just say screw it and leave it alone. Tis not worth the PITA... so I looked around a bit.

I found the IDENTICAL Jeep, only with 17000 miles for sale for around $19,999 much less than the other one. Eh, sounds good to me! Test driving tonight!
