old 77 CJ7 304 2bbl quadratrac autoT400. i have not verified whether its an amc or dana44. the 2 manuals i have give opposite info. one lists this yr having dana, the other lists amc.

but it leaks on the front. behind the yoke. i think it just needs a seal. i also think both axle types have same repair instr on this seal. it calls for a special tool to bolt onto the yoke so the nut can be loosened. and it should have @ 210ft/lbs of torque.

i was wondering if all of you that have replaced this seal had to use this special tool? or is it ok to just let the weight of the vehicle/tires keep the axle from turning?

Re: jeep rear axle leaks

I'd say you'll need the tool... Maybe rent one at the local auto parts house, if they have it...

The weight of the vehicle, even with the brake on, probably ain't gonna help ya.. Put a breaker bar on that nut and turn it w/o the tool, me thinks the jeeps wheels are gonna move..

If ya have compressed air and a really good (and I do mean really good) impact wrench, then you could at least remove the nut without the tool..

well heck. i don't have an impact wrench, but i can probably borrow one. i was hoping to be able to use a biga__ breaker bar to do it, and i know its not the best idea, but was hoping those rearends could handle the torque, if the brakes were held :(

once i can determine if its a flanged axle unit, i believe its not as picky about tension/torque on the yoke nut... still studyin it when i can. not in a huge hurry. it also is leaking dope on the left brake drum, so that side has to come out also.

just taking it one leak at a time- lol

dude
for the tool use a piece of 1/2 aluminium about 6 inches wide and maybe 2ft long. measure the drive yoke flange.
cut a rectangle the size of the flange. that way when the drive shaft is out this tool fits over the flange and you can let it rotate around and wedge on the frame rail. its eaiest to use an impact but can be done with 1/2 inch drive breaker. some units will require a new crush sleeve under the yoke assy. measure and record the rolling torque BEFORE removing the yoke and use a new sleeve to reset it to the original rolling torque. good luck and keep posting

I always used "Big Bertha", a 3/4" impact and zippppp, right off.
Then used the 'ol clickey to torque it back.
