Re: jet boat to outboard?

Interesting question....mine is an outboard boat that was built by a company that mainly made jet boats. There are a few that are similar to mine, but longer. I would question how it would handle after the conversion, jet drive boats are a lot heavier than outboards. I wonder if the back in would get loose without the weight? You might also want to measure how high your transom is in the back. Most are made for a certain shaft lenght motor. I would guess a short shaft would fit nicely on a jet boat.

the weight would probably be about the same when i have gear, gas, motor and seats. a short shaft would also seem to to the trick.

Well you need a full transom rebuild..... you need to add a splashwell....... a ton of work. WHY?

Do you have an outboard?

Is the jet unit trashed? Is the engine trashed?

Hello HM..

Re: jet boat to outboard?

Pics would help a bunch....Bob is correct about the splash well and transom...sounds like a seacast project to me. What lenght boat do you have? I think you are under estimating the weight issue, my 115 Mercury weighs in at 300#s a small block chevy is over 500# plus the pump. I'm guessing it was designed for 700 to 1000 # back there. I'm not trying to rule out your idea, just play devils advocate. How about a few pics and what your goals are?

Like others have already said, without more info on the exact boat there's not much to say.

I did it on one of my boats, it was an inboard jet and I converted it to an outboard jet. It was aluminum and fairly easy to do.

Re: jet boat to outboard?

theres a place on cape cod that sells old junky boats,
http://boatbrokerageinc.net/

I've seen several whaler jet boats on their website with toasted engines.

They recommend to chainsaw the transom out, seacast it and install a bracket.
No splashwell needed.

You end up with a decent whaler hull and the convenience of an outboard.

Re: jet boat to outboard?

Are we talking about a JET boat or a jet boat? :p Like a big old Berkly jet with a big inboard motor or are we talking about a little boat like a Seadoo, Four Winns Fling, Sugar Sand, etc etc.

Please start your own thread KingJon. I'd recommend starting it in the main Boat Topics area.
