jet drive noise??

HI,
the more I get into this boat the more problems I find.
I took the jet drive out(Berkeley 12JC-A) while replacing the transom.
When I turn the drive by hand I hear a very loud howling noise, not dissimilar to a large truck with bad brakes trying to stop.
I hear this noise and also some noise that can be best described as bubble wrap popping.

I have only had this boat on the water 1 time for 15 minutes, and the exhaust was very very loud, so I don't know if it was doing it then or not.
does this mean it needs a rebuild? if so is it hard to do?

thanks
Josh

Hello, Josh!
I think the boys in the I/O forum are going to be of more help on this so I'm moving it to that location.
Good Luck!

Could very well be the ujoints between the engine and the jet pump.

Re: jet drive noise??

Berkeley jets are easy to rebuild. The grinding sound is likely a combo of the main bearing being shot and the impeller rubbing against the wear ring. I have no idea what the popping noise is unless you've got some sea weed up in the housing and the impellor is popping it. The hardest part of a rebuild is getting the impeller off the shaft. A two arm gear puller is required (and a brass hammer to send some vibration through it). It's been a long time since I was in a Berkeley jet, but I believe if you take the nozzle off you can reach in and grab the impellor. If it moves laterally at all, the bearing is likely gone. Once you get the impellor off, you can heat the big stainless wear ring to soften the plastic gasket that holds it in place. These pumps are mechanically simple with few parts (a couple of seals, one bushing, the main bearing, the shaft packing, the plastic gasket, the wear ring, the shaft and impellor). I'd replace everything with the exception of the impellor (inspect the outer surface for extreme wear and the blades before deciding to reuse). To put the new wear ring and gasket in, you line them up and sit them on the housing. Place a 2 x 4 on it and gently tap on one side then the other, then back to the first, etc. until the assembly is started back into the housing squarely. Then use the end of the 2 x 4 and pound a little harder side to side until fully seated.

I forgot to mention that the shaft likely won't need to be replaced. Also, what Don S. mentioned about the U joint making noise is true. If you stick a big screw driver into the knuckle and are able to rock the joint at all, it is likely bad. As you've seen, this is easy to replace.

Re: jet drive noise??

berkly pumps are simple and really dont require any oddball tooling. the best gear puller is one easily obtainable at sears. its a 3 arm type puller with a locking collar that slides down the arms to prevent the arms from opening at all while pulling. its like 90 dollars. the gasket kit with a bearing and wear ring and shaft packing is about 220 its not a bad job but some of the shafts only come out the front and if yours is one it will require the engine to be removed to remove the impeller shaft. while your there new ujoints are cheaper than fixing the damage they cause when they fail. could also be the bushing/bearing on the stator housing has failed. seloc and clymer both make decent manuals that cover the berkly pumps. about 30 bucks or so and well worth the cash.
