Help! My 1983 jet sport 125hp has blown the engine.I can obtain a later model 175mercury engine but am concerned if it would mate to the jet unit.My main concern is the 125 is actualy a force engine (rebadged 'mercury sport jet')where as the 175 is the real deal.Any one tried to repower one of these?Any ideas?????(other then sink it)
thanks russ

Re: jetboat engine swap

There is an adapter plate bolted on the bottom of the powerhead that is then bolted to the jet unit. Now does the adapter that goes on the V6 Mercury fit the pump, that's what you need to find out. I know the adapter isn't going to swap between the engines. Going from the 125 to the 175 could possible cause problems in the drive system, like gears exploding or slinging the jet apart. Oops, forgot the spline on the pump. Nope, it won't match.

Re: jetboat engine swap

Thanks for the replies, I have seen a few rebuilt force outboard powerheads on the web.Any guesses as to if one of these outboard power heads would bolt up to the jet pump? The pump LOOKS the same as the outboard leg, but im not sure if its exactly the same. Thanks again russ

Re: jetboat engine swap

One thing to check for is the spline count on the shaft. Ran into a 90 hsp this year with a 13 count. Very rare and can't get them anymore. Guy had to junk the boat. We wasn't able to get a pump from Mercury either. So the idea we had to replace the pump and fit a different engine didn't float. We were getting some really good deals from Mercury on their reman engines for the jetboats last spring. I put one in my SeaRayer last spring and I think I paid around $2100 for complete engine ready to run with factory warranty.

Thanks Capt Ken, Im looking into maybe replacing the whole thing with a complete mercury jet drive assembly.Probably cost more then the whole boat is worth, but cant convince the boss to junk it!!
Have you seen these units complete & second hand anywhere?
Thanks again,russ

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...
You most definitely want to start your Own thread, like QC said,...
You'll also want to do that in the Jetski forum....
This is the I/O forum,+ We don't do jetskis in here....

Good Luck...
