i understand the procedure /but why do you put spark tester on wire
that you hook timing lite to #1 is tht wire supposede to be unhooked while you turn it over having probs with use of spark tester when setting timeing

It seems to me that this is needed for most timeing lights to sense charge traveling though the wire. My timeing light cable encircled the plug wire being used.

Seems likely that Mr. Reeves would anticipate that only a inductive timing light would be used for this kind of work. Surely MarkV_Deep6 is correct.

Also, it is good to have all the wires connected on your tester to see that all cylinders are firing.

i see i only have single tester but have seen the good one that check them all
will a good automotive timing light work .thanks bennyb

I assumed it was simply to have the plug wires 'grounded' per se, since all plugs are removed, in addition to ensuring you have full spark across all cylinders as Ezeke stated.

I hook up a multi way spark tester when testing compression on the larger hp motors as well.
