Johnson '02 90hp bad charge coil?

Has anybody heard of a charge or power coil going bad?

I suspect that I have a problem with mine but don't want to spend the money if they never fail.

Charge coil's are rare, rectifiers aren't.

Did you troubleshoot it?

The problem is intermittent. I don't know how to troubleshoot it. It only happens when the boat is in the water under load. It runs fine for 15 minutes and then loses power. If I throttle back and slowly advance the throttle in neutral it cleans up and runs OK for a while and then does it again.

Does the engine actually cut out or miss or just slow down? Sounds more like a fuel problem, try pumping up the primer bulb when the slow down occours and see if it picks back up. Just thinkin.

Pumping bulb does nothing. Choking each carb with my hand causes the same stumble on each carb. Fuel is fresh. Compression is fine. Carbs are pristine.
