I just picked up two Johnson 10 hp motors one is a 1955 and the other is a1958. The 58 has a seized piston in the top sleeve, I let it set with WD 40 for 3 or 4 days, pulled the head today, quite a bit of rust in that bore, any ideas on how to free it up without busting it up.......

Might try soaking in a proper penetrating oil such as PB Blaster (WD 40 is a water displacing fluid... hence WD)

Then just gently tap it one way then the other until it moves.

No manual.... got it loose this morning, by hitting the piston with the wooden handle of a heavy hammer, but it still has a problem. Are the top ends of a 1955 and a 1958 the same. I may rebuild the 55 as it seems to be free when I pull the rope starter. The 58 looks great, nice paint for its age, the 55 looks like its been rode hard and put away wet.

Never mind, I pulled the motor apart this morning, found the lower bearings seized on the crank, also one of the o-rings was missing on the crank. Anybody know how many roller bearings are on the rod end, I have 58 but I think some may have escaped.

My 72 6HP has a total of 60 needles (30 per connecting rod). Not a 50's outboard I realize, but I think that should be right.

Re: Johnson 10 hp

That sounds right, I guess tomorrow I will crawl around on my hands and knees in the shop to see if I can come up with any more. I didn't know that they were loose in there and just pulled it apart, wrong!!!! when I pulled the second one I kept them on the rod, but like a dumb s##t I didn't count them. I was going to buy a manual, but they are out of them, so I guess I'll just fly by the seat of my pants. Thanks for the reply.....I have been in the shop all day or would have replyed sooner.

Something that works well is a product called carb out... But any car valve cleaning product you place in your gas , should be ok.

Don't mix with gas... just pour pure on pistons for 24h.

oops you fixed... sorry about that.
