I just purchased a QD-14 off ebay, but I don't know if the engine is long shaft or short? How do you know? And can you convert one to the other? Thanks,

Waylan

Re: Johnson 10 qd14....longshaft or short?

If there is a 5" section bolted in between the lower unit and the midsection then it's a longshaft. I believe longshaft 10hp engines are rather rare, but if you can find one you can change the longshaft parts (driveshaft, shift shaft, water tube extension, and spacer).
If in doubt, just measure it:

These older engines will measure a little over 15" (16-18") if they're short shaft, or five inches longer if they're long shaft.

QD-14 indicates it began life as a short shaft. A longshaft from the factory would have been QDL-14
