this engine is jumping out of gear when put under load in reverse. it will stay in gear if i hold the linkage manually. How should I go about repairing this problem?

If it is ok in forward gear, I would look at adjustment. Maybe bad control box an/or cable could be stretched also.
I would start with adjustment first and go from there.
If it goes in forward without very much movement of the lever, then I would suspect adjustment.

If the lower has been off, the shift rod height may be mis adjusted. The proper height is measured in neutral, from the mounting surface of the lower unit, to the center of the shift rod hole. The tolerance on this is only 1/32". The proper height can be found in a service manual. You very well might have a worn clutch dog, and reverse gear as well.
