Hi guys,

I need your thoughts on this engine Johnson 115-HP - 1998 - cause I have a chance to by a very clean used boat and this is what is on it as for main engine.

Any problems that you know of on those ? about the oil injection system, is it reliable or they are problem system ?

And about everything on it ???

Thanks

Mario

Hard to say without knowing the previous owner. Most motors are good IF properly maintained and cared for. You could always do a compression test, to make sure you have a good starting point. If you do get it the guys on here will be able to help you with the maintainence and repairs, however a manual is a must. This should help you out with understanding the VRO system. GOod luck.

Mario, Those motors are an execellent design. However, as the buyer of a used motor, you need to get a manual and make sure the compression is good, the carbs are clean, the timing is correct and the warning systems, sensors and alarms work properly.

If it's a 60-degree engine, it's great. However, take a peek around the boat and see what oil the previous owner's been using. If it's aftermarket, you can assume the engine is at half-life from the get-go. All a compression test will tell you is if the rings are still on the pistons. If the aftermarket oil has caked up the ring lands, you'll get a good compression reading, BUT, in short order a ring-end will hook in a port and destroy that piston and cylinder. Or, if the engine runs lean due to blockage in a carburetor, the carbon can break off, causing top-piston damage. If you see OMC/Bombardier oil bottles, the engine SHOULD be in pretty decent shape. You could also ask the seller for the name of the servicing dealer, and check out what's been done.

Gee, grid, On what do you base you "gloom and doom" message about using non-BRP 2 cycle oil?
