No good deed goes unpunished.....After changing out the water pump on the engine, I would run the engine, get great flow in the tell tale but felt no good cooling job would be complete without a look at the thermostats.I got new ones, broke everything apart and had a good 2 weeks of miserable weather.(in other words I forgot how it came aprt) I have reassembled them in the only apparent order that fits but now the engine has no temp!! After running it for 5-10 minutes on the muffs ( the time it used to take to come up to temp) the block and heads are stone cold and the tell tale water is only about 4 degrees warmer coming out than going in.
Does anybody have a drawing or can tell me the sequence of the thermostats assembly. The manual is useless and offers no clues. There are the 2 themostats, 2 springs, 2 plastic relief valves that go in the end of the springs and assorted gaskets. In the block there are 4 holes, the outside2 direct water, the inner 2 support the springs ( I think) they all go into a middle cast metal piece then the outer metal cover with the hose outlets on them.
I fugure running a 2 cylce to cool is asking for oil build-up. Whatcha think?
Seb

About the only thing you might have done wrong is install the thermostats in backwards. But I don't know if this is possible, and it would definetly overheat.Quick.Are the grommets in place for the relief valves,as well as the gaskets for the thermostats?

Beyond that you need to read the actual temp with a 'wax' stick or pyrometer.163 degrees is overheated,145 is too cool.

DHP

Sorry I left out the year.....It's a 1991
Yes the grommets that hold the relief vales are there, as are the gaskets (cork) that go under the thermostats, as far as the thermostats going in wrong , it seems they can only in one way because if the heads (T-stat) are between the the outer casing and the middle metal piece, it does'nt look like it will go togeather plus that would put the temp sensitive side in the raw water side of things.
As always ..thanks for your input
Seb

I found ther exploded view parts lists I was looking for at Ishopmarine.com.
It showed that I did put the thermostats in correctly..imagine that, Now I wonder if putting it all togeather, I jammed a by pass valve open..maybe

might just be you did it right and on muffs it will not come up to operating temp because of the pressure of the hose. try putting it in the water and see if it comes up to temp then.

If it does'nt come up to temp. on the water test, you may want to check the pressure relief valves, that they are not in backwards. The tapered face of the valve faces, or seats into the grommet, The valve looks the same on both ends except for this tapered face.
