to make a long story short i have a 79 evinrude 140 and the cylinders are egg shaped so its obviously bad. i just bought a 77 johnson 115 and i was told by the mechanic i bought it from that i could pry just swap the powerheads and everything should line up. is that true? can i just swap the powerheads? thanks

Nope. The powerhead mounting (exhaust adapter) face changed when OMC went from the single thermostat to the dual thermostats. 1978 was the first year of the new powerhead congfiguration.
