I have a 1995 Johnson Faststrike V4. I recently got the motor overhauled. The first time I put it in the water I started having problems right away. The motor ran fine, except when the throttle was back in the idle position. The idle of the motor just started to randomly fluctate and sometimes it would get so bad I would have to just kill the motor. Well, I thought it might be a cable problem. I took it out again a second time and it started doing the same thing. The motor would run fine when we were moving. The motor ran fine all that day, except towards the end of the day something happened and the motor lost power. We couldn't get it past 3500 rpm with the throttle lever maxed out. WE couldn't go over about 7 mph so it took us about 45 minutes to get back to our dock. The mechanic that overhauled the engine told me to change the spark plugs because he had ran the oil at 25:1 during breakin. So I changed the spark plugs and took it out again. According to the book at the shop where I bought the spark plugs, they gave me a slightly different spark plug than what the mechanic had put in it but they said it would work because thats what the book had called for. This time it seemed to run better but it seemed to be running sluggish at take off and I could only get it to 5500 rpm with the motor trimmed out. Without the motor trimmed out it would run at a max of 5000 rpm. Before it started doing this I could run the motor at 5500 rpm without any trim. I haven't checked compression on it but I may try to do that tomorrow. Anyone out there got any ideas on what it could be? I don't know a whole lot about boats so I need some help here! Thanks in advance.
