I tried to unscrew the two screws from the lower unit to check on the oil. I snapped two bits trying to open them. Is the thread the other way??

Removal is counter-clockwise. Use a 3/8 screwdriver. The new caps for the allen wrench are easier - see your dealer.

Re: Johnson 115 hp '00 lower unit check

Bought a good 5/8 screwdriver. With the aid of a vise grip, turned the screws to open, no problem. Good thing I did, A little of the oil (about 10ml) was milky, the rest was black. I was supposed to been changed last year by a mechanic during the "winterizing" ($245.00). Due to injury did not use the boat much this past season and decided to do my own winterizing.

Changed the oil, what a PIA that was. I had a tube hooked up to the quart of oil and squeezing to the bottom hole to fill. Took like 15 minutes of hard squeezing (cold up here in RI). Thanks for the replies.
