The engine is question is an 83 model, which makes it a crossflow, not a looper. Racerone has the correct info. Back to the original question. It's not unusual for an owner to change cowlings on the crossflow engines. They were the same size for many years. Perhaps his boat was only rated for a 115, so he changed the cowling so it appears that his engine matches the boat capacity. The riveted metal tag on the transom bracket is usually the best way to tell just what the engine is. When you get into older engines, sometimes the powerhead gets changed as a result of catastrophic failure. In that case, you'd want to compare the serial number on the block with that of the transom bracket-it is possible that they are different. Check the casting plug on the top of your current block. The plug is painted over, but has the serial and model id on it and should match the transom bracket. See pic
