my johnson 115 V4 starts after a while if i slowly turn the key numerous times. I have taken off the top and i see that the starter does not go up to reach the fly wheel correctly and therefore does not start. I have manually turned it into place and it will start. is this a sign that it is on it's way out or can i fix it? Once it starts it seems fine but the first time can take a while.
any ideas will be graefully recieved.

Try a little white grease on the screw shaft only. Make sure you have a fully charged battery

Try bypassing the solenoid with a set of jumper cables. If the starter does what its supposed to
the contacts in your starter relay(soleniod) may be burned . This will cause a low voltage problem at the starter itself . If need be you can drill out the four rivets in the solenoid the get to the contacts. A few stokes with a file and they are good as new. Replace rivets with 8-32 mach screws and nuts.

been there...done that

Start by cleaning all electrical contacts to the starter & solinoid + battery. Make sure that the battery is fully charged.
