I have the repair manual for my 1995 Johnson 130 engine, oddly it specifies TWC-3 oil with nothing specific on brand but for lower unit they want their Johnson hi-vis oil. It doesn't even mention a viscosity. I put in Pennzoil when I changed fluid during my annual water impeller replacement.

Anyone know what the difference really is between the johnson stuff VS Pennzoil?

I'm not worried about saving a few $ but don't feel a need to buy into marketing scares.

CRC offers the proper 90 weight oil in tubes for about 4 per tube you'll need roughly 3 it is marine grade as printed right on tube.

It's a mechanical shift gear box that must be able to withstand some water intrusion.. not a rocket. Johnson/Evenrude does not make oil. They specify a spec and add their additive package to the lowest bidder and slap a label on it.

My question was more directed at if anyone knows for certain the real spec that this Jonny rude Hi-Vis oil is. From what I can dig it is in fact 80W-90. The same as the Pennz, and Merc oil. For some reason my local academy and wally world only carry the Pennz and the lower end quicksilver stuff. Worst marine does not show this oil on their website and I avoid them at all cost.

I have read somewhere that CRC was a direct equivalent of the Hi-Vis Evinrude stuff. This is not included in my repair manual but it has been shown in the past by others.

Really wish these manufactures would call a spec and not their own house brand products!
