johnson 135 several questions .....

ok guys im going away for the weekend and wont be online much if at all so i figured id stack this thread with a few questions. a quick background ... ive been posting on here the last few days abpout getting a 1975 135 johnson up and running again. if and of you read my earlier posts we were able to get her to run of a couple of spray bottles shot right into the carbs. i am going to order to rebuild kits for the carbs. while i was in there i took the intake manifild off to check the reeds sooooo....

1. when i install the new intake manifold gasket do i use some kind of rtv sealant ?? if so is it on both sides?? i know i cant cover the little holes or the groove with sealant .... pic ....

2. this next pic you can see 2 bolt holes on the intake manifold ... one looks partially closed ... from factory sealant ??

now... this engine has been sitting atleast 2 years so how far would you guys go ordering parts ?? i was going to go ahead and do waterpump, thermostats, fuel lines ...... would you guys go ahead and order everything or rebuild carbs first ?? i guess if i order everything i want to do to it i can return what i dont need or use ( ill have o check return policy ) thanks for your help and thoughts guys, scott

1 - If the intake gasket has a shiny apearance to it, that would indicate that it has a special factory sealer coating, in which case, fo not apply anything. If the gasket is simply a regular type gasket, coat it with oil and nothing else.

2 - The sealant in the bolt hole is simply due to the bolts being coated with gasket sealing compound, used to avoid having the bolts seize up from salt exposure etc. Really not needed though.

The reed picture with the "X" on all four reeds. Why the X's? That model did not incorporate filler blocks to increase crankcase pressure.

I haven't read your earily posts BUT it's best to check compression, piston play, and lower unit (water/metal), before one starts throwing parts at an engine, after which the method of purchasing parts would need to be your judgement call.
