As long as I can remember my engine (Johnson 140 VRO-1987) has smoked excessively on starting.Once I get going it fades and runs like a charm. The smoking is enough to kill a horse.Any suggestions.
Thanks,Les.

All Johnson VRO ( variable ratio oil ) systems smoke heavy till warm. They add more oil at low rpm's then at higher.

My question stated "Excessive".
Is there any way to ....reduce the smoke when starting engine. It's at the point of unbearable;can't breath, cough, choke, want to puke...... Thanks ,Les.

May be fuel restriction, air leak in fuel line or check valve in VRO pump.

Are you pumping the primer bulb on the oil tank before starting? If so that is not necessary.

Lester,

I have found that some oils smoke more than others.

I only used John/Rude oil in mine. I have used the Ficht Ram oil of late and have been impressed.
