I just purchased a johnson outboard from a guy I know at work , He said the guy he got it from told him it was a 1991 10 horse, It is a 15 horse the number was covered over , Im trying to find out the year, I saw some pics of a 91 and the graphics are different than mine. I cant give much info, I found the plate for model and serial #s . But they are missing. Is there any other way to find the year ? It has L77JC4 plugs in it, WHAT SHOULD THE GAP BE ? The side graphics has a thin red line under johnson then there are alternating gold and black bars beneath it with 15 in it. the pics i saw of a 91 had a large red bar with 15 in it. It is a tiller model with a long shaft. I would appriciate any help, Thank you, :(

Remove the hood and look on the side of the engine. Not sure exactly where it is on a 9.9/15. You should see a large core (freeze) plug. It will have numbers stamped on it.

Post those numbers.

Look on the top of the powerhead. Thre should be a round soft metal plug about the size of a nickel [looks like a freeze plug]. The model number should be stamped in here.
