Re: JOHNSON 15

You have a 1984 model, great little motor.

Water should exit through the center of the propeller.
Also, a small stream of water should exit the telltale, which is located at the back starboard side of the engine, a few inches behind the gear shift lever. The telltale often becomes plugged with dirt/debris. It can be cleaned out with a small wire.

Re: JOHNSON 15

What were the symptoms of overheat Tim?
And was the telltale still spouting water, or did that stop?
And what boat are you running on?

If it's an '84 Johnny 15 hp, it's an excellent motor. I had an '80 'rude and it was just terrific. Had it for years with no major problems. Keep the plugs clean, tho!

Bill

Re: JOHNSON 15

When you removed the cylinder head cover to get to the thermostat, presumably you checked out the waterways and they came up clean?

I don't think you can put the tstat in backwards because of its shape, but if it was possible this would explain your symptoms. In any case, if the tstat was not opening, overheating would quickly occur.

Somewhere, Tim, there's a blockage in the waterways. If the motor still runs, try a trial run without the tstat to see if there's an improvement.

Re: JOHNSON 15

The water flow circuit is roughly as follows:

Water is pulled in by the pump (impeller) and pushed up the copper tube, which should be sealed top and bottom. It then goes round the powerhead, with some going out of the telltale, through the cylinder head and cover, where its flow is regulated by the tstat. At this point it's hot, and it then flows back down the lower unit outside the copper tube and around the exhaust tube - exiting through the vent holes above the AV plate.

If you have water coming out of these vent holes, then it's circulating. But - there could be a blockage within the power head, causing the overheat problem.

It seems to me though, that you may not - as you've said - have enough flow. The telltale should show a strong flow. If you can hold the tube out sideways, it should make a good arc through the air, not just dribble straight down.

If you can run the motor on muffs, the above flow pattern should show up. If it runs on muffs without overheating, then that tells you you've got a water pump problem.

Hope this helps.
