I looked on the ground behind the boat and noticed a small puddle of oil below my outboard.
It seems to be coming from the two "wheep" holes front, high on the gear case, bottom side of where it mates to the engine. If I were to describe the oil it seems like exhaust oil. Black, dirty, thick, I just cleared it them with a tooth pick. I started using the new xd30 series of Johnson/Ev. oil and have never strayed from the brand. If you can help me figure out why it would be greatly appreciated.

Check the gearcase lube to see if it is now the same as what you've cleaned up. Frankly, what you've described sounds like excess fuel that has drained down through the black carbon ladden inner exhaust housing..... the housing between the lower unit and the powerhead.

Joe,
Thanks for the response. I checked level and color of gear lube and confirmed its ok. The oil level in the oil tank was extra full last time I used it. I think in the tilt position excess oil may be exiting thru the inner exhaust housing. I don't think it is evidence of a problem. Can you confirm it?
Thanks again,
Rich

I can't confirm it per se, but I can tell you that my Johnson 150 does the same thing some times. I often store it tilted like that on the trailer.

I was worried at first, but got an explanation similar to Joe's above and decided not to worry. It's been fine, so I wouldn't worry in your case either. Not to mention, it's good practice to listen to Joe (and the other mechs on here). :D
