I have a 1978 Johnson 150. The carbs were just rebuilt. New spark plugs. Great compression. The motor is hard to start when cold. I prime the bulb and when you hit the key it turns over and then starts to fire but the starter immediately disengages and it stops. You play this game for a few minutes and then it will just fire right up. It will start again great when warm and otherwise runs real good. Should the starter be kicking out like it is? Or, is this a tuning problem?

Are you using the choke along w/ turning ket to "Start" position for cold starts?

The starter will always and should disengage as soon as motor begins to fire.

If you're not using the choke (or primer) for cold starts, you are doing a lot of unecessary cranking. Many engines with require some intermitant choke actuation in the first 30 seconds of running to keep running.

It seems to be the same whether you use the choke or not. Usually I have to hold it in to get it started. I also have the idle lever up all the way. It almost seems like it is not getting gas to all cyls. The spark plugs are the ones that the little sticker on the plug wires call for.( I cant remember the #.) Once it is warmed up it will fire right up perfect if you just barely touch the key to the start position. The carbs were rebuilt and it had the same problem before they were done.
