i have a 1990 johnson gt150 that i just got on a center console boat. It runs really well with a couple of minor things. I took the vro pump off and pre mixing 87 octane gas 50:1 with xd 30 oil. I am running the champion plugs in it . after idling a minute or two it feels boggy when i go to take off, it planes fine its just not real responsive. Is this how these motors are or could i be running rich it smells a little gassy at idle. I have a 19p prop i know its not that its carbs, i have never cleaned them since i just got it either. what do you guys think i dont want to create a problem its not that bad really.

What boat and what load?

Has it always behaved like you described, or is this new?

What is WOT RPM?

Some more info might help here ...

Check your compression first. You need to know where it is as a new owner anyway. Also, check all 6 plug wires for spark. A spark tester is ideal. Or, you can check it when the engine is in gear, idling at the dock. Use an inductive timing light to check spark. Make sure the spark is strong and has no misfires. The engine needs to run 5500 to 5700 normally. If you have too much prop, the rpms' will be down at top end and that might create a bogging feeling when coming up on plane. If everything checks out, double check your sync and link. If you still have issues, you may need to get into the carbs.
