My newly purchased(used) 1994 Johnson 150 is spitting gas out of the 2 carbs on the bottom right(port) side at idle. The others seem not to be doing that. The plastic breather seems to be designed to reburn this fuel but it still leaks out into the housing and then out the back of the motor into the river. Could old gas have this effect? I have put sea foam in the tank and run it through the carbs.

Spitting fuel generally means a broken reed.

Give us an estimate of how much fuel is spitting out.

TMD

TI...I think the Doctor is right. Have you experienced any hard backfires lately or sneezing back through the carbs?

Enough after about 15 seconds you have a puddle in you hand....maybe a teaspoon(5ml) or so. Is this a bad sign money wise?

Re: Johnson 150 spitting gas

TI....it's bad enough. I wouldn't run the engine any more untill the problem was repaired. That much gas means another cylinder isn't getting the fuel mix it should have. Could toast a cylinder. Not to mention the safety factor involved here.

I would get an estimate on the repair work and talk to the mech as to what will be involved. Carb removal, reed cage got to come out to replace reeds. May also get a compression check also to make sure there is no other damage.

Well I am wondering, is this a job left to the trained mechanic or can a an inclined person purchase a repair manual and hope to come out OK.
I have replaced water pumps and the like on smaller motors and rebuilt carbs before.

tom

I wonder if maybe one of the reed blocks came loose. I have seen that before. Some of those engines shake quite a bit at idle.

Pull the carb off and peak inside.

You should be able to see damaged reeds...or the block that is loose.

Tell us what you see.

As OBJ says...DO NOT RUN the engine anymore until the problem is resolved.

TMD
