I have gone thru 3 power packs in the last four years. I just put one in last Feb. and now I have what seems like another bad pack.
This 1989, 150hp model only has one power pack, and the SELOC manual does not cover it. It says that all V6 motors have two packs.
I can not find out how to check the stator. The charge coils check OK at 930 OHMS, but the sensor
coils have no OHMS. I checked them when it was new and they also had no OHMS. And according to outboardparts.com the white wire from the timer base should have 150v, when cranked, but I have
Zero volts (using a digital fluke meter). Any suggestions on how to check the stator? And can the stator be causing the power packs to go bad?

Model # J150STLCEM Serial # R08236112
Year 1989, HP 150, 6 Cyls.

Thanks
Droutte

Re: Johnson 150 ST/SL Stator/Power Pack

droutte,
I'm still(!!) in the process of trying to figure out my intermittent spark problem on my '89 Evinrude 150 XP, and have gotten a lot of great suggestions of stuff to check out from Walker, Dhadley, Joe Reeves and a few others here. I have a Clymer manual that covers your engine, which may be about the same as mine. Do you have a fax #? If so, I could look up how to check your stator. I don't think you can check your peak voltage output using a conventional DMM, as my manual calls for a Stevens meter. Yesterday, I received a Stevens PVA-1 adapter to allow me to use a Fluke for this purpose. This was $45 from stevensinstruments.com. I hope to be able to try it out in the next few days because I want to be positive whether my stator is bad or not before I go replacing that expensive component! I was told that the resistance tests are of little use for troubleshooting these components, unless they are "way" out of spec. Yeah, I could have taken this to a mechanic, but I am learning a lot about my motor from this forum and at least attempting to do it myself. Let me know if you want info from my manual - I'll turn on the e-mail notification to this thread.

Edited: I just noticed that your model number is exactly the same as mine with the exception of the "J" instead of my "E". Also, Mike Seiler at seilermarine.com has really gone out of his way to help me out, and has great (at least I think so) prices on CDI ignition components for our motors.

Andy,
Maybe you should get a manual, if you don't already have one, and check your stator and rectifier/regulator too. I would be pretty fed up if I went through three packs in one year! That's a lot of beer money.
