I'm sure one of y'all has a good idea as to what my problem is: The engine revs and runs fine in nuetral (sputters some at low idle) but runs poorly and stalls out while in gear. After stalling, however, it starts back up fine. I think it could be carburetion trouble???

Howdy, EGT.
Could be carb problem, could be something else.

What year engine?

With multiple carbs, it is more likely that you are down 2 or 3 cylinders. Sounding good with no load doesn't tell you much. It can do that on 2 cylinders.

Pull plug wires one at a time. If there is no change, that is a dead cylinder. If rpm drops, that cylinder is making power.

If you have 2 cylinders dead, opposite each other it is the carb feeding those two. If you have three dead on the same side, you have lost one of your ignition systems, probably a powerpak.

If all cylinders are making power at idle, look into your fuel pump and fueling system.

Good luck

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

I had a similar problem on my 2000 150 Johnson. Would not run in gear after shutting it off for a couple minutes or more. To fix the problem, the shop had to adjust the carbs leaner than normal, but its ran great every since. :)

Hello EGT, I have an '86 150. Had a very similar problem one time when I accidently knocked the linkage from the timer base to the throttle lever loose. Engine started and reved without any back pressure but with exhaust in water it would stall. When I popped the linkage back in place all was right once again.
