Trying to help a friend with his rig. 1990 Johnson 150 (white cowling). Horn is "peeping" at WOT, around 5500 RPM. Motor appears to be cool. Any ideas? VRO is in use.

FD20..... Describe this "peeping". Constant, every 20 sec, every other sec ?

Joe,

The horn is weak, but fairly steady. I would say every few seconds.

FD20..... Some of you fellows are hard to pin down, a few seconds doesn't compute (grin). I'll give you the warning sequences as follows:

(V/6)
Constant beep= overheating or fuel restriction

Beep every 20 seconds= oil level down to 1/4 tank.

Beep every other second= VRO failure, oil restriction, air in oil line, no oil.

That should give you a starting point.

Re: Johnson 150 warning horn

Hi, Check the wires coming out of the VRO pump. Are there three wires or four. Mainly is there a purple wire in that wiring. Some of the old VRO pumps had three wires. The warning horns could give a false signal do to some type of electircal problem thru the VRO pump. OMC changed VRO pumps to a four wire pump that included a purple wire to send power to the VRO pump and the problem went away. You could also have the early signs of another problem. Fuel restriction that is not showing until the speed is reached. Air leak in the oil line, allow a small bubble in at high speed. Faulty oil level sender in oil tank. I have seen all of these give you that type of problem. It's better to take the time to find the source of the problem now, if it gets worse, it might be worse, if you know what I mean

Had the same problem with my 90 rude fond one of the temp sensors had a buildup of salt around were the wire was crimped to sensor, cleaned it up and recoated with liquid electric tape and that took care of it. I checked this with ohmmeter and was getting a very low read to ground Check all sensors especially VRO as in previous posts.
Good luck
