I'm looking at a boat with a Johnson 150hp v6. Mostly fresh water use, but I suspect some salt water use, also, due to the current owner's location and offer to test drive the boat on SF bay rather than towing it an hour to fresh water. Any input? Is this known as a good engine? Anything I should check besides compression?

I believe it's a 1985. The owner claims 380 hours on it.

That was a very good engine in 1985. What it is now depends on how much abuse and neglect it might have suffered in 25 years.

A test run should be a good indicator of condition. I'd also check the compression on all 6 holes. Should be 90-95 lbs on each if it is a base 150. A quick check of the lower unit oil will tell if it has water in it-not a good sign. OMC also made a high performance model 150- the XP/GT model. It was a desirable engine that made about 165 hp. The model code is J150S.
