That's not out of line for that outboard. They seem to sell for that much around here...even older ones.

Of course, that's for a nice-looking outboard that runs perfectly. Any flaws and the price should go down.

i see nadaguides list it between 500 and 600. is it safe to assume they list it that low because they are not taking into consideration the demand for light 2 stroke models? thanks for the reply by the way!

the electric start is worth $4-500 if you had to add it, later.

How nada works its outboard prices is a real mystery. It's basically a cartoon-guide to outboard prices. In my opinion, the guy down the street pushing a shopping cart and talking to Elvis probably has a better idea than the nada book.

$900 is not out of line at all. as a matter of fact, with electric start, she's worth more than $900 if she runs good. Just look at the cost of a new one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That motor probably cost around 1800-2200 when new and is not even near halfway through with it's service life. I'd want that much if it were mine.
I think if it looks taken care of and has good compression, its a good buy. That's one of the best small outboards ever built to me. You'll be lucky if it hasn't been scarfed up before you get there. Those motors, especially with electric start, are HIGHLY desirable. Especially since you can't buy a good lightweight 2-stroke anymore. Did I say check compression?:)

NADA is a bad joke when it comes to used outboard pricing. They're not even close.

You can buy one; Yamaha. I just bought a 15 for $2,200 when I was on vacation and my 25 died again. I don't think electric start is even available.

Sounds like a good deal.

It could be anything from 80 and up. I would hope closer to 100 and up but the main thing is they need to be within 10% of each other. Rick.

I would think the cylinders being as close as possible would be what you should be most concerned with. Gauges are so unprecise that you may be scared off for no reason. Expect it to be around 115psi I would think.

junior1113, that's about right for your 200hp 900-1400. the big motors do not hold value as much as the small ones.

Re: johnson 15hp 2 stroke price?

just an update, I picked up this motor today. compression tested identical in both cylinders at approx 105-110. overall was in good shape except the little fin on the bottom is bent from hitting something. has a slight curve to it but i guess it shouldnt be a problem bending that back, or will that break if i do that? its not bad and the guy said it didnt cause any issues but i think it might cause it to pull in one direction a bit.
the actual model was j15RLEEA, anyone know where i can get owners/service manuals for a decent price?
one other question. it has one of those bolt through cav plate dolefins on it. i dont think im going to need that, is there issues with removing them since theres holes drilled in the caviation plate now? i dont want to lose any possible top end due to that fin.

Re: johnson 15hp 2 stroke price?

The curved skeg won't make any difference to you. It can probably be straightened, but if it's not pronounced, I'd just leave it. They are pretty easy to break.

The fin can be removed. You can plug the holes by taping the underside, then using an epoxy filler in the holes, smoothing it before it cures. You can sand it later to finish the smoothing, then hit it with some spray paint...available at your local Evinrude dealer.

Owners and service manuals for those recent models are available from the dealer, as well. If you want, you can also find them on ebay, often for less money, but you may have to wait. There are a couple of ebay stores that seem to have an endless stock of current and recent manuals. I got the service manual for my 1992 6hp for just $15.

Re: johnson 15hp 2 stroke price?

one more bit of help here from the knowledged folks here. According the plate this model is J15RLEEA. i found a site that translates that to a Johnson 15 hp Rope Start Long shaft 1999 model. Well the guys ad stated it was a short shaft motor. which is all i can use on the Achilles boat it was to go on. assuming the L is for Long shaft. is this correct? if so this is really going to suck since the ad misrepresented what he was selling. I'm at work now and cant measure the motor to make sure. But the reason i question it is because the R code states its rope start when the motor is clearly Electric as well. is it possible the tag is wrong? its definitly factory installed electric starter. i just didnt even think of checking the shaft length when i was looking at it since it was stated in the ad s/s. I hope im not stuck with a motor I cant use.

Thanks again
Glen

How can you tell is was "factory installed"? The reason I ask is because I purchased an OEM "electric start kit" for my 1996 9.9 4-stroke (E10FREDR) motor ... and once installed, my hope is that it looks "factory installed" ... but it won't be!

Re: johnson 15hp 2 stroke price?

If someone installs the factory electric start kit, you won't be able to tell the difference between it and a factory electric start.

However, the length is another matter. You're going to have to measure to find out. If you need a short shaft and can't install an adapter to handle a long shaft, then that's not the outboard for you.

However, since that outboard uses an extension to the exhaust housing, plus a longer driveshaft and other parts, it's easy to convert a long shaft to a short shaft, and it's often done. So, regardless of what the tag says, it may well have an electric start kit and a shortened exhaust housing. Messing with used outboards means that the i.d. tag may not represent the state of the outboard at the time it changes hands.

So, measure and look for the exhaust housing extension. If it's not there, then you have a conversion to a short shaft.

Heck, if you go back a few more years, an outboard you buy may be made up of parts from more than one year, with even the powerhead substituted. You just can't always count on what's on the tag being what's in the outboard.
