Hi there, bought a Johnson from a guy. He believed it was a mid 80s but wasn't sure. The model number appears to reference a 50hp motor which it is not. I've got pictures of different numbers I found in the engine as well as under the fly wheel. Hoping for some help to determine its age

Post the model number off the tag on the transom bracket. The first two of the last three digits give the production year in code:

The tag / model serial # is off a 1974 50 hp.-----The motor in the picture appears to be a 1990 model based on cowling graphics and the cd unit under the flywheel.

Check for an aluminum disc pressed somewhere into the powerhead to see if the number matches. Looks like a hybrid.

The identification on a 1990 motor is a less than durable sticker.-------------Those metal tags are easy to switch / install on any motor.

There are only a few reasons to put a fake ID on a motor. Mostly not too honorable. I'll let you draw your own conclusion.

That whole motor looks to be around a 1990 model. I would guess someone put the tag on for some reason because evinrude tag rivets don't rust like yours are. The 1974 clamp brackets also won't fit on the newer models like yours. I would take the tag off because it doesn't belong on that motor and 74 parts won't fit on your motor. The 1988-92 models are darn near identical get parts for those years. Water pump is the same for 20 yrs so anybody should be able to get that for you.

No, you're looking for an unpainted aluminum disc a bit bigger than a quarter. So far these are casting numbers from the various parts.

That appears to be a serial number and not a model number. Like racerone has said the decals are from a 1989 or 1990 model.
