My 1978 15hp johnson has a prop size of 9 1/4"x 8".
The parts book p/n is 387389 and says its for the sailboat model.
What's this sailboat model?

Taking a guess, but the sailboat model would not be designed for a "planing hull." The lower unit is probably geared differently for more torque at lower speeds. It may also have a longer midsection to keep the prop in the water.

Re: Johnson 15HP prop

Does it "Yahtwin" on the cowl? I have a 90, 9.9 and it does. Also mine says SEL in the model number. That is good to know about the prop., it does look different than the 9.9's and 15 I have but they are all short shaft motors. Does yours have a tiller handle? Mine came with controls and no tiller. I guess that's why I haven't paid any attention to it thus far. Some day. Rick.

In the 1981 prop guide the (387389 91/4 X 8) is listed as a general use it is the lowest pitch in normal use.Certainly intended for a heavier boat.Standard is (380118 91/4 X 10) at the top of the list. A (386669 10 X 5) is listed for heavy boats.
