i have just purchased a 1986 skeeter bass boat with a johnson 175 vro. The motor does not seem to want to pick up all of its cylinders and boggs down when you give it throttle. it idles fine and after you get it to plane it seems to pick up the cylinders. Any ideas. I took it too a boat mechanic and he told me it was junk, but he also told me he had a nice pro-craft for sale. sure he was trying to put it too me. please help. eurekapizza@conwaycorp.net

Besides taking it to a wrench that wants to sell you something else, what have you done to narrow the problem?

Tried squeezing the bulb?
What do the plugs look like?
Done a compression check?

Let us know. :)

I have a 175 evinrude that dies between 800-1100 RPM, if you can get it past 1100 it goes great. All I can tell you is what not to replace and that is, the fuel line, the filter, the bulb, check the fittings back to the tank, the plugs, have the carbs cleaned twice, have the reeds replaced while your in there the second time, the mags checked, the stator replaced, the vro replaced, your prop stolen while at one of the four shops its been to. There is something I forgot Ill think of it latter. If you have any luck pass it on!
Good Luck!
bfishing

Re: johnson 175 boggs down, wont pick up cylinders

thanks for all the replies,

i am going to check the compressions today(sunday). From what i was told the motor was recently rebuilt. It looks like it has been split because of the silicon sealant. I am looking for a repair manual for the motor in town so i wont have to wait three or four days for it. of, is there any recommended carb cleaner that i can pick up at any parts store??

i have just checked the compressions on all 6. every one is at 92-97. Is that good or bad. Could it be a bad coil?? i switched the plug wire to see if that was it and it was not. Also, i put a rag over the carbs on the cylinder that is cutting out and no change at all. i put a rag over the firing cylinders and of course they bogg down. i guess this means there is a vacuum leak correct? but could a vacuum leak keep a cylinder from firing. It fires sometimes and sometimes it doesnt. I really dont understand it. hope to hear from you soon.

shannon the pizza man

Are you sure the cylinder isn't getting spark? Try swapping coils. If you've narrowed it down to a fuel problem the next thing I'd do would be overhaul the carbs.

So are you saying that you Don't have spark to that cylinder? Have you checked for spark?

95lbs compression is a little on the low side but the important thing is that there all within 10% of each other. Im willing to bet that youve got yourself an ignition problem. try this, with boat securely tied to dock, shift into gear and run motor up to rpm where problem occurs. with insulated pliers, pull plug wires one at a time and verify which is the problem cyl. Then swap coils with another cyl. If problem moves, youve got a bad coil. If not, swap powerpacks and see if problem moves. If the problem moves, bad pack. If not, well then your goona need a manual and a dva meter. Check trigger outputs. Should be between 1 and 7 volts. Happy troubleshooting!!!

salty,

i did the spark plug trick the other day and it showed me that it was really only firing on a few cylinders. 3 or so if i remember correctly. i have taken it to a wrench that i think i can trust. i have warned him already that i will check whatever he says is wrong to verify. he seems like a pretty square shooter. will notify when i find out what is wrong. personall i think it is the stator or power pack.
