I am trying to figure out for a friend whether or not he should be running 87 octane or higher for his 175 GT VRO. The only reason he is asking is because he heard that it runs a higher compression and has an advanced cam. Appreciate any input!
Ok then, next question. The outboard is sucking down fuel faster than it should along the lines of 10 gal to travel 8 miles and not anywhere near full throttle mostly around 1500-2700 rpm. We are replacing the plugs today, anything else that could be causing this?
10 gallons plus or minus is pretty close to what a 175 would use in an hour not on plane at plowing speed. At wide open throttle it uses around 15 gallons per hour on plane. Two stroke outboards are the mother of all fuel eaters. Most economical engine operation is to bring the boat on plane and then back off throttle until a slow cruising speed is attained enough to keep the boat on plane. This reduces drag and engine load.I'm guessing your best economical cruising rpm would be around 4000-4200.Every set up is a little different.
sounds good, the previous owner told him it should be getting better performance but i think its not getting that performance because its carrying more weight. to get up to plane is about 4000 rpm an can throttle all the way back to 2700 to maintain. thanks for all the information though i appreciate your help.
