Johnson...175 Need Help

I got a Johnson 175 Hp today that was a early Christmas present from a friend who owns a marina.<br />The previous owner run it with a cracked lower unit, it locked up, and he went and bought a new engine.<br />I read that the shift rod must be removed to get the lower off, is this the 7/16 nut with a screw slot behind the lower carb?<br />The Model number is J175TLCSA, serial number is J5352388.<br />What year, and any bad info on this particular engine?<br />Thanks.!!!!

Thanks JB, the motor was on a Doctors boat, he had been having the marina winterize the engine but this past winter he decided to do it. [going to save money] He fogged the engine, but didn't check the oil in the lower unit. Well it cracked, he was told not to run it till he had it repaired, well he got about 3 miles from the marina and it locked up. The engine has an estimated 250 hours on it.
